Why ChatGPT scripts need one change before they become video

ChatGPT writes scripts the way a screenwriter would hand them to a production team: a scene heading, camera directions, music cues, a runtime estimate, sometimes an image-generation prompt for every shot. That is useful when a person is going to produce it. It is noise when a tool is going to read it, because every line of direction is a line the tool has to decide whether to say out loud.

The fix is not to throw the directions away. It is to ask for them in a shape that keeps narration and visuals apart, so the voice reads only the narration and the drawing follows only the visual line.

What to ask ChatGPT for

Paste this into ChatGPT, with your topic in place of the brackets:

Three details in that prompt do most of the work:

• Two to four sentences per scene. A scene is one idea with one picture. ChatGPT's default is either a paragraph per scene, which makes long static scenes, or one sentence, which makes the video feel like a slideshow.
• Written to be heard. Scripts written for reading have long sentences, parentheses and lists. Said aloud by a generated voice, they sound like a document being read out.
• One visual sentence, not a prompt. "A worker asleep while a man taps the window with a long pole" is something a drawing can show. Three lines of lighting and lens instructions are not.

What to strip out if the script is already written

If you already have a script from ChatGPT in its default format, clean it before you paste. Delete:

• Timestamps like 0:00 to 0:25. The video's length comes from the narration, not from these.
• Music and sound cues. They will otherwise be read aloud or ignored unpredictably.
• Emojis, and any text in brackets that is not either narration or a visual.
• Any "Length: 60 seconds" or "Format: vertical" line. Set those with the tool's own controls, where they actually take effect.
• Ellipses. Generated voices read three dots unpredictably. Use a comma or a full stop.

Keep the scene breaks. They are the most useful thing ChatGPT gives you, because they are where one drawing ends and the next begins.

Keep the wording, or let the tool rewrite it

This is the one decision that matters on the paste screen, and it is easy to get wrong.

A common mistake is to paste a finished, carefully worded ChatGPT script and let the tool redraft it, then be surprised that the video says things differently. The opposite mistake is to paste a 5,000 word article with Keep my wording and get a video as long as reading the article aloud. If the script is final, keep it. If it is material, let it draft.

Choose the look before you generate

For a script that explains something, a whiteboard video, where the diagram draws itself as the narration explains it, is the default and usually the right one. For a script that tells a story, with people and places and something happening to someone, choose a format that draws scenes rather than boards:

• Drawn: every scene is one hand-drawn picture, inked on as you watch. Good for storytelling channels and short history.
• Painted: painted places with a cast moving through them. Good when the same characters appear across the whole video.

Set the length on purpose

A ChatGPT script usually tells you how long it will run, and is usually wrong, because it guesses. A generated voice reads about 150 words a minute. Count the words in your narration and divide by 150: that is the video. If you let the tool draft instead, set the length yourself; for a long source, a video about a third as long as reading the source aloud keeps the substance without reading it out.

Fix it scene by scene

Watch the whole thing once without stopping. Then fix, in this order:

   Lines that sound written

   Rewrite the sentence and regenerate that scene's narration alone. Nothing else in the video moves.

   Pictures that do not show the claim

   Mute the video. Any scene where a stranger could not guess what is being said from the picture is the one to redraw.

   Names and numbers

   Proper nouns, years and units are where generated voices trip. Spell them the way they should sound if the voice gets one wrong.

Common questions

Can ChatGPT make the animated video itself? No. It can write the script, suggest the visuals and generate still images one at a time, but it does not produce a narrated, animated video with scenes timed to the voice. That is the step a video tool does.
