How openCanviz works, from your first draft to the finished export. Start with your first video, then dip into whichever part you are working on.
Getting started
- Your first video
Make your first openCanviz video: describe a topic or paste your text, check the plan, then press Make my video.
- Ways to start a project
The three ways to start a project in openCanviz: generate with AI, import JSON or Mermaid, or open a blank canvas.
- The Projects page
Find, open, organize, duplicate and delete your videos on the Projects page, and learn how Trash and project limits work.
Making a video
- What you can give it
What the create box accepts (a topic, pasted text, or a web link), the size limits, and what openCanviz cannot read.
- Length, shape and aspect ratio
Set how long your video is, how its story is shaped, and whether it is landscape 16:9 or vertical 9:16.
- The plan step
Review and change the plan of scenes before anything is drawn, then press Make my video to build it.
- Saved plans
Plans you draft are kept on your account under Your plans, so you can come back and build them later.
- While your video builds
What happens after you press Make my video: the progress card, how long it takes, and what to do if a build fails.
Editing
- Edit a scene
Select, move, retype and restyle what is on screen, and manage scenes from the Scenes panel.
- Edit with AI
Ask the Assistant to change your video, edit one chapter with a prompt, or rework a single element with quick AI options.
- Regenerate scenes and pictures
Rebuild one scene from scratch, draw a picture again and pick the version you like, and know the Free plan rebuild limit.
- The timeline
Use the timeline to play a scene, reorder and time its steps, set the camera, and fine-tune each element's motion.
- Saving, undo and backups
How the editor saves your work, how undo, redo and Undo rebuild work, and how to download and restore a backup.
- Preview and present
Play your video in the editor, set captions, sound effects and looping, and present it fullscreen or step by step.
- Edit a cartoon skit
Rewrite a skit's lines, gestures and faces, change costumes and places, and build a custom look for a character.
Narration and voice
- Narration and voice
Choose the language and voice when you create a video, then edit, regenerate or record the narration for each step in the editor.
- Captions
Turn on-screen captions on or off, change how they look, and what happens to them when you download the video.
- Re-voice in another language
Make a translated copy of a finished video, with its narration, on-screen text and voiceover in another language.
Look and style
- Choosing a look
The five format cards on the create screen, what each one makes, and how to pick before you draft.
- Whiteboard options
Choose the board a Whiteboard video is written on, what sits behind it, and whether the drawing hand shows.
- Drawn and Painted
Pick a drawing style and a character style for Drawn and Painted videos, plus the backdrop, pacing and colour options.
- Poster
How Poster videos work, and how to pick the sheet style, how each picture arrives, the camera and how fast it cuts.
- Fine-tuning the style
Use Fine-tune, your own look, saved characters and your brand kit when creating, then adjust the style in the editor.
Sharing and export
- Downloading your video
Download your finished video as an MP4, choose a resolution, and what free accounts can do.
- Sharing with people
Invite specific people to view or edit a project by email, and find projects others have shared with you.
- Public links and embeds
Turn on link sharing so anyone can watch your video without an account, and embed the player on a web page or in notes.
Account and billing
- Plans and credits
What the Free, Plus and Pro plans include, what credits pay for, and where to see your balance.
- Managing your subscription
Upgrade to Plus or Pro, and change your card, view invoices or cancel through Manage plan.
- Your account and support
Ways to sign in, resetting your password, what you can change on the Account page, and how to reach us.
JSON format
- The openCanviz JSON format
What an openCanviz JSON file contains, how to import one, and how scenes, nodes, edges and steps fit together.
- JSON schema reference
Every field in an openCanviz JSON file, with types and defaults, plus the full JSON Schema to validate against.
- JSON examples
Complete openCanviz JSON files you can copy, import and edit: a flow diagram, a two-scene explainer and a vertical Short.
- JSON rules for AI agents
Have an AI agent write openCanviz JSON: the agent skill, the rules it must follow, common mistakes, a checklist and a prompt.
