Look and style

Drawn and Painted

Pick a drawing style and a character style for Drawn and Painted videos, plus the backdrop, pacing and colour options.

Last updated

Drawn and Painted videos are built from pictures. Drawn makes every scene one hand-drawn picture, inked on as you watch. Painted puts a cast of characters in painted places. Both ask the same two questions in the Style row: how the whole scene is drawn, and how the people are drawn.

Drawing style

The Drawing style sets how the whole scene is drawn, every object and place, not only the people.

StyleWhat it looks like
Auto (default)We read your topic and pick the style that fits it best
MarkerHand-drawn whiteboard marker, the classic explainer doodle
Flat vectorClean uniform outlines, precise geometric shapes
StorybookSoft brush-inked outlines, rounded and warm
ComicBold inked comic panels, lively varying line weight
Pencil sketchLoose sketchbook pencil, quick doubled strokes
Coloured pencilWaxy grainy outlines, hatched colour, the paper showing through
Bold posterVery heavy black outlines, chunky graphic silhouettes
BlueprintHairline mono-weight schematic, everything the same weight

Characters

Characters sets how people are drawn, separately from the rest of the scene:

  • Stick: a circle and five lines, told apart by one thing each.
  • Simple: oval head, block body, no fingers or folds.
  • Full (default): drawn the way everything else in the picture is.

So Comic with Full gives you comic people in a comic world, while Comic with Stick puts stick figures in a comic world.

Fine-tune options

Open Fine-tune for the rest. Each format only shows the answers it can use.

OptionDrawnPainted
Behind themPlain paper only. Every scene is one whole picture, so the place is inside the picture.Painted place or Flat colour
PacingDrawn on screen onlyDrawn on screen or Cut to each scene

Drawing handShown or HiddenShown or Hidden
Real photosDrawn only or AllowedNot offered

With the Drawing hand hidden, the video keeps its drawn look and every stroke still appears as planned. Only the hand is never on screen.

With Real photos set to Allowed, up to two scenes may show a real photograph or a screenshot, mounted on a card, where the real thing explains more than a drawing would.

Keep the same person in every scene

Use Character in Fine-tune to set a recurring character:

  1. Describe the person, or press Suggest someone.
  2. Optionally add a picture: Generate one, or Upload a picture (PNG, JPEG or WebP).
  3. Tick Save to my characters, to use in the next video if you want to reuse them.

If you leave it blank, the video picks its own lead from the story so the same face appears in each scene. On Painted, you can also describe Everybody else, up to 6 more people.

How many characters you can save depends on your plan. See Fine-tuning the style.

Your own look

To match a style you already like, use Your own look in Fine-tune and upload a reference picture, such as a frame from a video or your own artwork. Every drawing is made to match its hand. Only the style is borrowed, never the subject. See Fine-tuning the style.

After the video is built

You can redraw a single picture, or ask the AI for a different version of a drawing, without changing the format. See Regenerating scenes and pictures and Editing with AI.
