Narration and voice

Captions

Turn on-screen captions on or off, change how they look, and what happens to them when you download the video.

Last updated

Captions show the current step's narration line along the bottom of the video. They are on by default, and you can turn them off in the editor with Captions: on/off in the playback settings menu, or the Captions switch in Canvas style. When you download the video, captions that are on are burned into the MP4.

Turn captions on or off

Either of these changes the same setting for the whole video:

  • From the toolbar: open the playback settings menu (tooltip "Playback settings") and click Captions: on/off.
  • From the right rail: open Canvas style and use the Captions switch.

The setting is saved with the project, so it stays the way you left it next time you open the editor.

Change how captions look

With captions on, the Captions section in Canvas style shows more options:

OptionWhat it does
StyleBar puts the words on a colored band. Spoken word shows the words with the one being spoken highlighted.
SizeMakes the caption text smaller or larger.
OpacityHow see-through the band is (Bar style only).
TextThe color of the words.
BandThe color of the band (Bar style).
Spoken and OutlineThe highlight color for the spoken word and the outline color around the text (Spoken word style).

What the captions say

Each step's caption comes from that step's narration. To change the words, edit the line in the Narration panel. See Narration and voice.

If you set Voiceover to None when you created the video, the scenes are captioned but silent. That suits videos that will play without sound, such as in a feed or on a screen in a hallway.

Captions in your download

Captions are part of the picture in the MP4 you download. They are not a separate file, so viewers cannot turn them off in their own player. If you want a version without captions, turn them off before you download. See Download your video.

Read them through

Play the video through once with captions on before you download. Long narration lines make long captions, and splitting a long line across two steps keeps each caption easier to read.

Captions in other languages

When you re-voice a video into another language, the narration is translated, so the captions follow it. See Re-voice in another language.
