Saving, undo and backups

How the editor saves your work, how undo, redo and Undo rebuild work, and how to download and restore a backup.

Last updated

The editor saves your changes automatically, about two seconds after each edit. To step back, use undo and redo, or Undo rebuild for a scene you regenerated. For a copy you keep yourself, download a backup file.

How saving works

There is no save button. A small status icon in the toolbar tells you where things stand. Hover over it to see:

StatusWhat it means
Saving...Your latest change is being saved.
All changes savedEverything is saved to your account.
Failed to saveThe last save did not go through. Keep the tab open and check your connection.
Changes saved locally onlyYour changes are only in this browser for now.
Sign in to save your diagrams to the cloudYou are not signed in, so nothing is saved to an account.

To rename a project, click its title in the editor ("Click to rename").

Undo and redo

  • Undo: Cmd/Ctrl+Z, or the undo button in the toolbar.
  • Redo: Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+Z, or the redo button.

Undo covers the whole editor, not just one scene.

Undo rebuild

When you regenerate a scene, the old version is kept so you can go back to it.

  1. Open the Scenes panel.
  2. Right-click the scene and choose Undo rebuild.
  3. You will see "Scene N restored to the previous version".

It brings back the version from before the most recent regeneration. If the scenes have changed since, a message tells you that version is no longer available. See Regenerate scenes and pictures.

Keep a safety copy

Undo and Undo rebuild only reach so far. If you are about to make big changes and want a safety net, download a backup first, or duplicate the project from the Projects page. A duplicate counts toward your plan's project limit.

Download a backup

  1. In the editor, open the More menu.
  2. Choose Download data (backup).
  3. The Export Diagram dialog opens. Download the .json file and keep it somewhere safe.

Restore a backup

There are two ways to bring a backup back:

  • Into the project you have open: More > Restore from backup, then choose the .json file. Its contents load into the editor in place of what is there now.
  • As a new project: go to Create, choose Import, and paste the file's contents or use Upload a file, then click Import project. Imports do not count toward your project limit. See Ways to start.

Restoring replaces what is open

If you might want the current version too, download a backup of it before you restore an older one.

Deleted projects

Deleting a project from the Projects page moves it to Trash, where you can restore it for 30 days. See The Projects page.
