Best Tools for Making Videos in Kannada
Kannada video tools sorted by job, which ones list Kannada, and why YouTube can dub Tamil and Telugu but not Kannada. Plus four Kannada tests to run first: Kanglish, word-final vowels a Hindi-trained voice swallows, ottakshara conjuncts, and numbers.

The best tool for making videos in Kannada depends on the job. For a drawn explainer or lesson built from your own notes, a document-first tool such as openCanviz drafts the scenes and narration, and you can record the Kannada voice yourself if the generated one sounds off. For an AI presenter, HeyGen lists a Kannada voice and Kannada video translation, and Synthesia lists Kannada among its languages. NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook, makes Video Overviews in Kannada. YouTube's automatic captions support Kannada, but its auto dubbing does not. For voice alone, Sarvam Bulbul, built in Bengaluru, and ElevenLabs's v3 model both list Kannada. Test any tool on Kanglish, word endings, conjuncts and numbers first.
The Kannada gap
Kannada sits in an awkward place for video tools. It has tens of millions of speakers, a large and busy creator scene, and one of India's biggest tech cities. It still gets left off feature lists that include its neighbours. YouTube's auto dubbing works for Tamil and Telugu and not for Kannada. ElevenLabs's older Multilingual v2 model lists Tamil but not Kannada. A tool that says "Indian languages" on its home page may mean Hindi and two others.
So the first rule is plain: look for Kannada listed by name, on the specific feature you need. Voice, translation, captions and avatars are often covered separately, and a tool can have one and not the others.
The second rule is that support on paper is not the same as sounding right. A Kannada viewer in Mysuru or Hubballi will hear a wrong vowel in the first sentence.
Sort the tools by job
| Job | What you start with | Tools to look at |
| Drawn explainer or lesson | Notes, a script or a document | openCanviz, NotebookLM Video Overviews |
| AI presenter on screen | A script | HeyGen, Synthesia |
| Translate an existing video into Kannada | A finished video of someone speaking | HeyGen, Synthesia |
| Voice only, edit yourself | A script | Sarvam Bulbul, ElevenLabs, AI4Bharat models |
| Captions on your own recording | A video with Kannada speech | YouTube automatic captions |
Find your row first. An SSLC science teacher in Davanagere, a KAS coaching channel, a Bengaluru fintech explaining its app to customers, and a channel teaching Kannada to people who moved to Bengaluru for work are four different buyers.
Drawn explainers and lessons
openCanviz. You paste notes, a script or a document, set a target length, and it drafts chapters, narration and a drawing for each point, in styles including whiteboard, doodle on paper, painted, cutout and poster. Every scene can be edited afterwards. Narration can be set to other languages. For Kannada, preview one scene before you build the whole video, because the generated voice may sound off: flat stress, or word endings clipped the way Hindi clips them. If it does, record your own narration and replace the generated voice, which openCanviz supports. Keep my wording narrates your script exactly as written, which matters when you have chosen carefully which words stay in English. Keep on-screen words to a few per scene and check how the Kannada looks in every one. It is free to start, and free videos carry a watermark. It suits processes and mechanisms: how a UPI payment moves between banks, how the Krishna Raja Sagara reservoir feeds the canals around Mandya, the parts of a flower for Class 7.
NotebookLM Video Overviews. Google's NotebookLM, now renamed Gemini Notebook, turns uploaded sources into a narrated overview video, and Kannada has been among the 80 languages for Video Overviews since August 2025. It needs almost no input and is useful for summarising a II PUC chapter for your own revision. The limit is control: if a scene is wrong you mostly regenerate rather than fix that one scene.
AI presenters and translation
HeyGen. Avatar-led video. Kannada (India) appears in both its voice list and its video translation list. Translation takes an existing video of someone speaking and produces a Kannada version, with or without lip sync, and lets you edit the translated script. Read it closely. Machine translation into Kannada tends to produce formal written Kannada, which sounds stiff in a product video aimed at people who speak Kanglish all day.
Synthesia. Business video with an AI presenter. Its supported language list includes Kannada, including for dubbing. Check that the specific voice and avatar you want are available in Kannada before you commit to a series, because coverage differs between features. It suits HR and compliance video for a company with staff across Karnataka.
Where YouTube helps, and where it stops
Automatic captions: yes. YouTube's automatic captions support Kannada. Check names, numbers and technical terms, and correct them in YouTube Studio. Kanglish speech is where automatic captions most often go wrong, so read those lines twice.
Auto dubbing: no. YouTube's auto dubbing languages include Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, but not Kannada, in either direction. An English tech channel cannot auto-dub into Kannada, and a Kannada channel cannot auto-dub into English. For a second language, switch the narration language yourself and check the result, or record it. The same gap applies to Gujarati, covered in best tools for making videos in Gujarati.
Voice on its own
Sarvam Bulbul. A text to speech model from Sarvam AI, which is based in Bengaluru, built for Indian languages with Kannada among them. It is designed for code-mixed speech, which makes it the first one to test for Kanglish.
ElevenLabs. Kannada is listed for the Eleven v3 model, not for Multilingual v2. Check which model is selected before you judge the voice, or you may reject a tool that does support Kannada.
AI4Bharat models. AI4Bharat at IIT Madras has released open-source text to speech models, including Indic Parler-TTS, with Kannada among the supported languages. They are free but need technical setup, so they suit an engineering student project in Bengaluru or Manipal better than a teacher on a deadline.
General editors. If you edit the video yourself, check that your editor lists Kannada by name for text to speech and for auto captions before you rely on either. For your own on-screen text, use a font built for Kannada: Google Fonts has Noto Sans Kannada, Baloo Tamma 2, Hubballi and Anek Kannada, among others.
Four Kannada tests to run before you commit
1. The Kanglish test. Most Kannada creator and classroom speech in cities is mixed. Give each voice the line a teacher would actually say:
"ಇವತ್ತು ನಾವು supply ಮತ್ತು demand graph ನೋಡೋಣ, price ಯಾಕೆ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತೆ ಅಂತ ತಿಳ್ಕೊಳ್ಳೋಣ."
Then the formal version:
"ಇಂದು ನಾವು ಬೇಡಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪೂರೈಕೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿಯೋಣ."
Does the voice switch into the English words without a pause? Does the spoken line sound spoken, or like a formal sentence read badly? Some voices are good at one register and poor at the other.
2. The word endings test. Most Kannada words end in a vowel, and the vowel matters: ಮನೆ is "mane", not "man", and ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ends in a clear "u". A voice trained mostly on Hindi tends to drop final vowels, because Hindi does. Listen to the ends of words in both lines above. Also listen for the retroflex ಳ in words such as ಬಾಳೆಹಣ್ಣು and ಕೋಳಿ, and for doubled consonants, as in ಅಕ್ಕ, which should be held, not skipped.
3. The ottakshara test. Kannada writes the second consonant of a cluster as a small form below or beside the first, and the r in front of a consonant as a separate mark after it. Some text engines get these wrong. Type these as on-screen text: ದ್ಯುತಿಸಂಶ್ಲೇಷಣೆ, ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ, ಸೂರ್ಯ, ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ, ಸ್ತ್ರೀ. If any conjunct appears as a full letter with a visible virama instead of a joined form, or shows a box, change the font or the tool.
4. The numbers test. Give the voice "1 ನವೆಂಬರ್ 1956", "₹2,50,000" and "3.14". Some voices read years digit by digit, some switch to English, and some read 2,50,000 as two hundred and fifty thousand instead of ಎರಡೂವರೆ ಲಕ್ಷ. Kannada digits (೧, ೨, ೩) are less common in everyday print, but if your material uses them, test those too.
A worked example: how a UPI payment works, in Kannada
A tech or personal finance channel in Bengaluru is a natural Kannada use case, and UPI is a topic every viewer already uses without knowing what happens. A five scene outline for a ninety second video:
- The tap. You scan a shop's QR code and enter your UPI PIN. Drawing: a phone, a QR code on a counter.
- Your app asks. Your payment app, through its partner bank, sends the request, with the shop's UPI ID and the amount, to the UPI network run by NPCI. Drawing: an arrow from the phone to a box labelled NPCI.
- The banks talk. NPCI asks your bank to debit your account and the shop's bank to credit theirs. Drawing: two bank buildings either side of the box.
- The confirmation. Both banks reply, and within seconds your app and the shopkeeper's speaker both say the payment went through. Drawing: two ticks and a small speaker.
- Why it is fast. Money moves bank to bank directly, not through a card network, which is why it works for a ten rupee chai. Drawing: a cup of tea and a coin.
That is about 220 spoken Kannada words. Keep the labels to UPI, NPCI and the two bank names, written in English if your audience reads them that way. Check each step against NPCI's own description before you publish. The same structure fits any finance topic; how to make a finance explainer channel covers the rest.
Make it
- 1
Check Kannada is listed for your feature
Voice, translation, captions and avatars are listed separately. A tool that lists Tamil or Telugu may still not list Kannada.
- 2
Write the script in your register
Kanglish, spoken Kannada or textbook Kannada, decided once and written in Kannada script with the English terms you want kept. About 150 spoken words a minute is a fair guide.
- 3
Run the four tests
The Kanglish and formal lines, the word endings, the five ottakshara words and the numbers. Drop any tool that clips the final vowels.
- 4
For a drawn explainer, paste and keep your wording
In openCanviz, paste the script, choose Keep my wording, pick whiteboard or doodle on paper, set the length, and preview one scene with narration before building the rest.
- 5
Record your own voice if it sounds off
Record the narration on a phone in a quiet room and replace the generated voice. Kannada viewers notice a wrong vowel at once, and your own voice avoids that.
- 6
Check every label and number
Pause on each scene, keep on-screen words few, and confirm every conjunct is joined. Fix labels in the editor, one scene at a time.

Common questions
Which tool has the most natural Kannada voice? Run both test lines on Sarvam Bulbul, ElevenLabs v3 and any presenter tool you are considering, and have a Kannada speaker listen without knowing which is which. Your own recorded voice is still often the most natural option for teaching, and it costs nothing.
Can I make a Kannada version of my English videos automatically? Not with YouTube auto dubbing, which does not cover Kannada. HeyGen and Synthesia list Kannada for translation. Otherwise switch the narration language and check every line, or record the Kannada narration yourself.
Should I write the narration in Kannada script or in Roman letters? Kannada script, with English words left in English. Voices read Kannada script far more reliably than Kannada typed in Roman letters ("ivattu naavu").
Are AI-made Kannada videos allowed on YouTube? Yes. YouTube's concern is mass-produced, repetitive content with no original contribution. A lesson or explainer built from your own notes, in your own words, is original work whichever tool drew or voiced it.
Listen to the last letter
Paste the word Bengaluru, written in Kannada script as in this post, into the voice you are considering. If the final u disappears, it is reading Kannada like Hindi, so record that narration yourself and compare. It is free to start.
Turn any concept into an animated explainer
Type an outline, get a narrated, animated whiteboard video in minutes. No design skills, no timeline scrubbing. Free to start.
