The best Punjabi video making tool depends on the job and on the script. For a drawn explainer or lesson built from your own notes, a document-first tool such as openCanviz drafts the scenes and narration, and you can replace the voice with your own Punjabi recording if the generated one sounds off. For voice alone, Sarvam Bulbul, ElevenLabs Eleven v3 and Microsoft's Azure voices list Punjabi. Synthesia lists Punjabi for AI dubbing, NotebookLM (now called Gemini Notebook) makes Video Overviews in Punjabi, and YouTube can auto-dub English videos into Punjabi. Almost every Punjabi voice is built for Gurmukhi. If you write in Shahmukhi, expect to record your own voice.

Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi decides more than the tool

Punjabi is written in two scripts. In Indian Punjab, and across most of the Sikh diaspora in Canada, the UK and Australia, it is written in Gurmukhi, left to right. In Pakistani Punjab, the same language is written in Shahmukhi, a right-to-left Perso-Arabic script that uses the Urdu alphabet plus a few extra letters such as ݨ for the retroflex n.

That split matters more than any feature list. When a voice or captioning tool says "Punjabi", it nearly always means Gurmukhi Punjabi, and its language code shows it: Sarvam and Azure label their Punjabi as pa-IN. A Lahore creator who pastes a Shahmukhi script into those tools may get an error, a skipped line, or a voice that reads the words with the wrong pronunciation. Test before you plan.

So decide first.

  • Writing in Gurmukhi (PSEB students, Patiala and Amritsar university classes, Canadian Punjabi channels): most of the tools below are open to you.
  • Writing in Shahmukhi (Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan creators, Punjabi literature in Pakistan): plan to record your own narration, and treat any generated voice as a bonus you test, not a promise.
  • Speaking Punjabi but writing in Urdu or English (common in Pakistani schools, where the medium of instruction is usually Urdu or English): the script you type and the language you speak differ. Write narration in the script your voice tool reads, or record it yourself.

Drawn explainers and lessons

openCanviz. You paste notes, a script or a document, set a target length, and it drafts chapters, narration and a drawing for each point, in styles including whiteboard, doodle on paper, painted, cutout and poster. You edit any scene afterwards. Narration can be set to other languages, but treat Punjabi carefully. Make and preview one scene before building the rest. If the generated voice sounds wrong (a flat reading of tones, a mangled place name, Hindi pronunciation on Punjabi words), record your own narration and replace it, which openCanviz supports. Keep on-screen words few, and check how the script renders in every scene, because drawn labels in Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi are not guaranteed to come out right. The Keep my wording option uses your script verbatim, so your Punjabi, whether Majhi, Doabi or Malwai, stays yours. It is free to start, and free videos carry a watermark. It suits processes and cause and effect: how canal irrigation changed the Punjab doabs, how the Green Revolution raised wheat yields and lowered the water table, how a bill passes in the Vidhan Sabha.

NotebookLM Video Overviews. Google's NotebookLM, now renamed Gemini Notebook, turns uploaded sources (PDFs, notes, slides) into a narrated overview video. Its help page lists Punjabi for both Explainer and Short Video Overviews. It needs almost no input, which makes it good for summarising a chapter for your own revision. The trade-off is control: when one part is wrong, your main option is to regenerate, not to fix that scene. Test which script it writes on screen before you share it with a class.

Presenters and dubbing

Synthesia. Business video with an AI presenter. Its AI dubbing page lists Punjabi among the supported languages. Coverage differs between stock voices, custom voices and dubbing, so confirm that the exact voice you want speaks Punjabi before you plan a course around it.

HeyGen. Avatar-led video with a video translator that HeyGen says covers more than 175 languages and dialects. Punjabi is not shown on its public translation page as of this writing, so check its in-app list before relying on it.

YouTube auto dubbing. Built into YouTube Studio. The direction matters: English videos can be auto-dubbed into Punjabi, but Punjabi is not a source language, so a Punjabi video cannot be auto-dubbed into English. That makes it a way for an English channel to reach Punjabi viewers, not a way to make Punjabi content. Listen to each dub before leaving it published.

Voice and captions on their own

Sarvam Bulbul. A text to speech model from Sarvam AI in Bengaluru, built for Indian languages. Its documented codes include pa-IN, Punjabi in Gurmukhi. Test it with the mixed line below, because Punjabi teaching speech is full of English words.

ElevenLabs. Punjabi is in the language list for the Eleven v3 model, which covers more than 70 languages. It is not in the older Multilingual v2 list, so check which model you are using. One voice, or a clone of your own, can narrate both your English and Punjabi versions, which keeps a series consistent.

Azure Speech. Microsoft lists two Punjabi (India) neural voices, Ojas and Vaani. They are aimed at developers rather than teachers on a deadline.

YouTube automatic captions. Punjabi is on YouTube's automatic captions list. Check every name, number and technical term in YouTube Studio before publishing, and check which script the captions come out in, since Pakistani viewers may not read Gurmukhi and Indian viewers may not read Shahmukhi.

Phone editors and fonts. CapCut has been blocked in India since 2020, so it is not an option for most creators in Indian Punjab, although many tutorials still recommend it. Use an editor available on your app store and check that its text tool shapes Punjabi properly. For text you add yourself, Google Fonts has several Gurmukhi fonts, including Noto Sans Gurmukhi, Mukta Mahee, Baloo Paaji 2 and Anek Gurmukhi. For Shahmukhi, use a Nastaliq font such as Noto Nastaliq Urdu or Gulzar.

Four Punjabi tests to run before you commit

These take fifteen minutes and tell you more than a feature page.

1. The mixed-language test. Give each voice the line a teacher would actually say:

ਅੱਜ ਅਸੀਂ supply ਅਤੇ demand ਦਾ graph ਦੇਖਾਂਗੇ, ਤੇ ਸਮਝਾਂਗੇ ਕਿ price ਕਿਉਂ ਬਦਲਦੀ ਹੈ।

Does it switch smoothly into the English words, or stop and change accent each time? Does it read "graph" as English, or spell it out?

2. The Gurmukhi shaping test. Type these as on-screen text: ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼, ਸਿੱਖਿਆ, ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ, ਪੰਜਾਬ. They cover a subscript letter (the pairin rara in ਪ੍ਰ), the addak that doubles a consonant, a nukta, and the tippi for nasal sounds. If the vowel signs float away from their letters or the subscript becomes a separate character, every label in your video will break the same way.

3. The Shahmukhi test. If you write in Shahmukhi, paste a short line such as پنجاب دا پاݨی and see what happens. Does the tool accept it at all? Does the voice read it as Punjabi, or as Urdu? Does on-screen text join the letters and run right to left, with ݨ displayed rather than a box? Most tools fail at least one of these. That is the honest reason to record your own narration.

4. The numbers test. Give the voice "1947 ਦੀ ਵੰਡ", "₹2,50,000" and "3.14". Some voices read years digit by digit, some switch into English or Hindi, and some read 2,50,000 as two hundred and fifty thousand instead of two and a half lakh. For history, economics or maths, this test decides the tool.

A worked example: one script, two audiences

Say a Jalandhar teacher wants a four-minute video on why the Punjab water table is falling, for Class 10 students, and a version a cousin in Lahore can share with a farmers' group.

The Gurmukhi version: write the script in classroom Punjabi with English terms where students use them ("tubewell", "paddy"), paste it into openCanviz with Keep my wording, choose whiteboard, set four minutes, and preview scene one. The scene list might read: rain and canals refill the ground, a tubewell draws water up, paddy needs standing water through summer, more is drawn than refills, the water table drops a little each year, what farmers and the state have tried.

The Shahmukhi version: make a second project from the same structure, with the script rewritten in Shahmukhi by someone who writes it every day, and record the narration yourself scene by scene. Keep on-screen words to two or three per scene, and if a drawn label in Shahmukhi comes out wrong, replace it with a picture or a number. A wrong label is worse than none.

For the general method of making one video in two languages, see how to make a video in two languages at once.

Make it

  1. 1

Pick your script and your row

Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi, then drawn explainer, presenter, dubbing, voice only or captions. Only compare tools in the same row.

  2. 2

Write the script in your register

Classroom Punjabi with the English terms your viewers use, written in the script your voice tool reads. About 150 spoken words a minute is a fair guide.

  3. 3

    Run the four tests

The mixed line, the Gurmukhi words, the Shahmukhi line if you need it, and the numbers. Drop any tool that fails the test that matters for your subject.

  4. 4

For a drawn explainer, paste and keep your wording

In openCanviz, paste the script, choose Keep my wording, pick whiteboard or doodle on paper, set the length, and preview one scene with narration before building the rest.

  5. 5

Replace the voice if it sounds off

Record your own narration scene by scene on a phone in a quiet room with soft furnishings, and replace the generated voice. For Shahmukhi scripts, plan on this from the start.

  6. 6

    Check every label and number

Pause on each scene and read the on-screen words. Keep them to two or three per scene, and fix broken letters in the editor or swap in a picture.

For recording your own narration well, see how to add voiceover to a whiteboard video. The same comparison for neighbouring languages is in best tools for making videos in Hindi and best tools for making videos in Urdu, which covers Nastaliq text in more depth.

Common questions

Which tool has the most natural Punjabi voice? For Gurmukhi, test Sarvam Bulbul and ElevenLabs Eleven v3 against the mixed line, on phone speakers, because that is how most viewers will hear it. For Shahmukhi, your own recorded voice is usually the only natural option today.

Can I type Punjabi in Roman letters? For narration, avoid it. Voices read Gurmukhi far more reliably than Punjabi typed in English letters ("asi ajj dekhange"). Phone keyboards such as Gboard include Punjabi, so you can type in the script directly.

Will one video work for viewers in India, Pakistan and Canada? Spoken, often yes, since the language is shared and dialect differences rarely block understanding. Written, no: on-screen text in one script is unreadable to many readers of the other. Keep on-screen words minimal, or make a version per script.

Are AI-made Punjabi videos allowed on YouTube? Yes. YouTube's concern is mass-produced, repetitive content with no original contribution. A lesson built from your own notes, in your own words, is original work, whichever tool drew or voiced it.

Run the Shahmukhi line first if you write it

Paste a three-word Shahmukhi line into any tool you are considering before reading its feature page. If it cannot read or display that line, you know to plan your own narration from day one. It is free to start.
