The best tool for making videos in Malayalam depends on the job. For a drawn explainer or lesson built from your own notes, a document-first tool such as openCanviz drafts the scenes and narration, and you can record the Malayalam narration yourself if the generated voice sounds off. NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook, makes Video Overviews in Malayalam from uploaded sources. For dubbing, YouTube can auto-dub English videos into Malayalam and Malayalam into English, and Synthesia's dubbing lists Malayalam. For voice alone, Sarvam Bulbul and ElevenLabs's Eleven v3 model both list Malayalam, and YouTube's automatic captions support it. Test any tool on Manglish, chillu letters, script style and numbers before you commit.
Look for Malayalam by name, feature by feature
Malayalam is better covered than it was two years ago, but coverage is uneven within a single product. ElevenLabs is a good example: its Eleven v3 model lists Malayalam, while its older Multilingual v2 model, which many tutorials still recommend, does not. YouTube auto-dubs English into Malayalam but does not offer expressive speech for Malayalam, so the dubbed voice will not copy the speaker's tone. A tool's home page saying "Indian languages" tells you nothing.
So check the specific feature you need (voice, translation, captions, avatar, on-screen text) and look for Malayalam in that feature's own list.
Sort the tools by job
| Job | What you start with | Tools to look at |
| Drawn explainer or lesson | Notes, a script or a document | openCanviz, NotebookLM Video Overviews |
| AI presenter or video translation | A script or a finished video | Synthesia, HeyGen |
| Dub an English video into Malayalam | A finished English video | YouTube auto dubbing, Synthesia dubbing |
| Voice only, edit yourself | A script | Sarvam Bulbul, ElevenLabs Eleven v3, AI4Bharat Indic Parler-TTS |
| Captions on your own recording | A video with Malayalam speech | YouTube automatic captions |
An SSLC science teacher in Thrissur turning chapter notes into lessons is in the first row. A Gulf-based company dubbing an English safety video for Malayali staff is in the third. A Kerala PSC coaching channel that already films its classes needs only the last row.
Drawn explainers and lessons
openCanviz. You paste notes, a script or a document, set a target length, and it drafts chapters, narration and a drawing for each point, in styles including whiteboard, doodle on paper, painted, cutout and poster. You edit any scene afterwards. Narration can be set to other languages, but do not assume a natural Malayalam voice: preview one scene before you build the whole video, and if the generated voice sounds wrong (flattened vowel length, chillu endings swallowed, English words read with Malayalam stress or the other way round), record your own narration and replace it, which openCanviz supports. Keep my wording uses your script verbatim, so your register stays yours. Keep on-screen words few and check how Malayalam labels render in every scene. It is free to start, and free videos carry a watermark. It suits processes and cause and effect: how the southwest monsoon reaches Kerala, how a panchayat budget is passed, how the Vembanad backwaters formed.
NotebookLM Video Overviews. Google's NotebookLM, now renamed Gemini Notebook, turns uploaded sources into a narrated overview video, and its help pages list Malayalam for both its explainer and short overview formats. It needs almost no input and is useful for summarising a Plus Two chapter for your own revision. The limit is control: if a scene is wrong, you mostly regenerate rather than fix that one scene. openCanviz vs NotebookLM for document to video compares the two approaches.
Presenters, translation and dubbing
Synthesia. Business video with an AI presenter. Malayalam appears in the language list for its AI dubbing. Coverage can differ between dubbing, stock voices and avatars, so check that the exact voice and feature you want are offered in Malayalam before building a course around it. It fits HR, onboarding and compliance video, where a presenter is expected.
HeyGen. Avatar-led video with a strong translation tool, and Malayalam appears on its video translation page. Check which direction you need (into Malayalam, or Malayalam into English) and listen to a sample before committing, because the regional sound matters: a Malabar listener and a Thiruvananthapuram listener notice different things.
YouTube auto dubbing. Built into YouTube Studio. English videos can be auto-dubbed into Malayalam, and Malayalam videos into English. For a Malayalam creator this is a way to reach English viewers without recording twice; for an English channel, a way to reach Kerala. Expressive speech, which copies the original speaker's pitch and intonation, does not currently cover Malayalam, so expect a plainer voice. You can review or remove each dubbed track in YouTube Studio.
Voice and captions on their own
Sarvam Bulbul. A text to speech model from Sarvam AI in Bengaluru, built for Indian languages, with Malayalam among its supported languages. Its documentation says it handles code-mixed English and Indic text, which matters because real Malayalam teaching speech is full of English words.
ElevenLabs Eleven v3. Lists Malayalam among its 70 plus languages. Use v3, not Multilingual v2, for Malayalam. One voice, or a clone of your own, can narrate both the English and Malayalam versions of a video.
AI4Bharat Indic Parler-TTS. An open-source model from AI4Bharat at IIT Madras, released under the Apache 2.0 licence, covering Malayalam and 19 other Indian languages plus English. It is free but needs technical setup, so it suits a college project team more than a teacher on a deadline.
Captions. YouTube's automatic captions support Malayalam. Check them on every name and technical term and correct them in YouTube Studio.
Fonts. If you add text yourself, use a font built for Malayalam. Google Fonts includes Noto Sans Malayalam, Manjari, Gayathri, Chilanka and Baloo Chettan 2.
Four Malayalam tests to run before you commit
1. The Manglish test. Most Malayalam classroom and YouTube speech mixes in English. Give each voice the spoken line a teacher would actually say:
"ഇന്ന് നമ്മൾ monsoon എങ്ങനെയാ Kerala-യിൽ എത്തുന്നത് എന്ന് നോക്കാം."
Then the formal textbook line:
"ഇന്ന് നമുക്ക് കാലവർഷം കേരളത്തിൽ എത്തുന്നത് എങ്ങനെയെന്ന് പഠിക്കാം."
Listen for whether the English words sit naturally inside the sentence, and whether the spoken line sounds spoken. Some voices manage the formal line and stumble on the mixed one.
2. The chillu test. Malayalam has chillu letters, consonants written without an inherent vowel at the end of a word: ൻ, ർ, ൽ, ൾ, ൺ. Some text engines and fonts show them as a consonant with a visible virama instead. Type these as on-screen text and as narration: അവൻ, അവർ, കേരളം, മക്കൾ, എന്റെ. The last one, with its ന്റ cluster, breaks more often than any other common word. If it looks wrong on screen, every label with it will.
3. The script style test. Malayalam is printed in two styles. The reformed script introduced in the 1970s writes some vowel signs and the ra sign separately from the letter; the traditional style (പഴയ ലിപി) joins far more letters into ligatures. Fonts differ: some lean towards the traditional look and some towards the reformed one. Neither is wrong, but a student used to one style may find the other harder to read quickly, so check which one your tool's text produces and whether it matches what your viewers learned. Try പുസ്തകം, ക്ഷേത്രം and ഗ്രന്ഥം.
4. The numbers test. Give the voice "2018 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 15", "₹1,50,000" and "3.14". Listen for years read digit by digit, a sudden switch to English, or 1,50,000 read as one hundred and fifty thousand instead of one and a half lakh. For economics, history or maths content, this decides the tool.
A worked example: the monsoon reaching Kerala
Geography is a natural fit for a drawn Malayalam explainer, and the southwest monsoon is a topic every Kerala student lives through. A six scene outline for a two minute video:
- Hot land, cooler sea. By May the Indian landmass heats up and air over it rises, leaving low pressure. The Indian Ocean stays cooler. Drawing: a red India, a blue ocean, an L and an H.
- The winds turn. South of the equator the southeast trade winds blow towards the low pressure; as they cross the equator, the Earth's rotation turns them into southwesterly winds. Drawing: a curved arrow bending at the equator.
- Picking up water. Crossing the Arabian Sea, the winds collect moisture. Drawing: small droplets gathering along the arrow.
- The Western Ghats. The moist air meets the Ghats and is forced to rise; it cools, the water condenses, and heavy rain falls on the windward side. Drawing: a mountain range with clouds piled against the western slope.
- Onset around 1 June. The India Meteorological Department's normal date for the monsoon's onset over Kerala is 1 June, and it declares the actual date each year. Drawing: a calendar page and an umbrella over Kochi.
- The rain shadow. East of the Ghats, the air descends and is drier, which is why the Tamil Nadu side gets far less rain in June. Then, in October and November, the northeast monsoon (തുലാവർഷം) brings a second rainy season. Drawing: a dry plain beyond the hills, then the arrows reversing.
That is about 300 spoken Malayalam words. Keep labels to a few words per scene, such as കാലവർഷം, പശ്ചിമഘട്ടം and the date, and decide once whether you write "monsoon" in English or Malayalam. Check the science against your SCERT textbook before you publish. For more on explaining a sequence like this, see how to explain a process in a video.
Make it
- 1
Pick your row
Drawn explainer, presenter, dubbing, voice only, or captions. Only compare tools that do the same job.
- 2
Write the script in your register
Spoken Malayalam with English words, or formal textbook Malayalam, decided once and written that way. About 150 spoken words a minute is a fair guide.
- 3
Run the four tests
The Manglish and formal lines, the chillu words, the script style words and the numbers. Drop any tool that fails the test that matters for your subject.
- 4
For a drawn explainer, paste and keep your wording
In openCanviz, paste the script, choose Keep my wording, pick whiteboard or doodle on paper, set the length, and preview one scene with the narration before building the rest.
- 5
Replace the voice if it sounds off
If the generated Malayalam voice stumbles, record your own narration on a phone in a quiet room and replace it. For a teaching channel your own voice is often the better choice anyway.
- 6
Check every label and number
Pause on each scene and read the on-screen words. Keep them to a few per scene and fix any broken chillu letters or wrong terms in the editor.

Common questions
Which tool has the most natural Malayalam voice? It depends on whether your Malayalam is spoken or formal, and on your region. Run the two lines above on Sarvam Bulbul, ElevenLabs Eleven v3 and any presenter tool you are considering. For a teaching channel, your own recorded voice is still often the most natural option, and it costs nothing.
Can I turn my English YouTube videos into Malayalam? Yes. YouTube auto dubbing can add a Malayalam audio track to English videos, and you can review or remove it in YouTube Studio. The voice will be plainer than yours, because expressive speech does not cover Malayalam yet. Check names and technical terms.
Should I write narration in Malayalam script or in Manglish typed in Roman letters? Malayalam script, with English words left in English. Most voices read Malayalam script far more reliably than Malayalam typed in Roman letters ("innu nammal").
Can I make one video for viewers in Kerala and in the Gulf? Usually yes, since the audience shares the language. The bigger choice is vocabulary: a Gulf workplace video may need more English terms on screen, and a Kerala school video more textbook Malayalam. Decide for your main audience and keep it consistent.
Type one word before anything else
Paste the word എന്റെ into the on-screen text and the narration of the tool you are considering. If it renders with a broken cluster or the voice trips on it, the rest of your Malayalam labels will have the same problem, so record that narration yourself and keep the text short. It is free to start.
Turn any concept into an animated explainer
Type an outline, get a narrated, animated whiteboard video in minutes. No design skills, no timeline scrubbing. Free to start.
