How to Turn a PDF Into a Video
To turn a PDF into an animated explainer video automatically, use a document-first tool: paste or upload the PDF, get a full narrated draft, then edit scene by scene.

Turn a document into a videoTo turn a PDF into an animated explainer video automatically, use a document-first workflow. You give openCanviz the text from your PDF, a report, a white paper, a one-pager, a lesson handout, and it drafts the whole narrated video: every scene planned, narration written to match the content, and the drawing paced to the voiceover. You are not rebuilding your PDF slide by slide. You are handing over the writing and getting back a finished draft to refine.
This works because a PDF is mostly structured text: headings, sections, and paragraphs that already carry the argument. That structure is exactly what a document-first tool uses to decide where one scene ends and the next begins. The cleaner the PDF's structure, the cleaner the scene breaks, and the less editing you do afterward.
The steps
- 1
Get the text out of your PDF
Copy the relevant sections, or upload the file so the text and structure can be read.
- 2
Paste it into openCanviz
Keep the headings and section order intact so the scene boundaries follow your document.
- 3
Draft the video
The whole narrated video is planned at once, one scene per idea, with narration already written.
- 4
Watch it through once
Note the scenes where the PDF's detail did not translate cleanly.
- 5
Edit scene by scene
Trim dense passages, rewrite narration, swap a diagram, or change a scene's visual style.
- 6
Export the finished video and download or share it.
Trim before you paste
PDFs often carry footnotes, page headers, and legal boilerplate that make noisy scenes. Strip those out first so every scene earns its place.
Which PDFs convert best
Not every PDF is a good candidate, and it helps to know which are.
- Converts cleanly: reports, explainers, training handouts, product one-pagers, lesson notes. Anything that reads as prose with clear sections.
- Needs trimming first: dense academic papers, contracts, spec sheets. The ideas are there, but you will want to cut detail so each scene stays focused.
- Convert the source instead: a PDF that is really an exported slide deck. If you still have the original slides, start from those. See how to convert PowerPoint slides into a video.
The rule of thumb: a video scene should hold one idea. A PDF paragraph that makes one point becomes one clean scene. A paragraph cramming five points needs to be split or trimmed before it reads well as animation.
How this differs from a manual editor
A manual whiteboard tool would have you read the PDF, decide the scenes yourself, and build each one on a blank timeline. A document-first tool does that first pass for you. Your PDF's structure becomes the storyboard automatically, and you spend your time editing rather than composing from scratch.
The output is a narrated whiteboard animation, not a PDF with a voice reading over it. The concept is drawn as it is explained, so a viewer follows the idea being built rather than staring at a static page.
Common questions
Does it just read my PDF out loud over the pages? No. It rewrites the content into scene narration and draws each concept. The PDF is the source material, not the thing on screen.
What if my PDF is image-heavy or scanned? It works best with real text. A scanned PDF with no selectable text gives it little to work with, so convert or retype the key text first.
Can I control the look and branding? Yes. Every scene is editable, and you can switch visual styles per scene. If you want to compare an editable approach with an automatic one, see openCanviz vs NotebookLM for document to video.
